Joe Biden Gives George Soros - US's Highest Civilian Award

On January 4, 2025, President Joe Biden awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States' highest civilian honor, to 19 distinguished individuals during a ceremony at the White House. Among the honorees were philanthropist George Soros and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, whose selections have sparked significant controversy and debate.

George Soros, a 94-year-old billionaire and prominent Democratic donor, was recognized for his extensive philanthropic efforts and contributions to progressive causes. Due to his advanced age, Soros did not attend the ceremony; his son, Alex Soros, accepted the award on his behalf. Critics have expressed outrage over this decision, labeling it a "national disgrace" and questioning the appropriateness of honoring such a polarizing figure.

Hillary Clinton, who served as Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013 and was the Democratic presidential nominee in 2016, was honored for her lifelong advocacy in healthcare, women's rights, and the promotion of democracy. Her selection has also faced scrutiny, with detractors pointing to past controversies during her political career.

Other notable recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom included:

  • Bono: Lead singer of U2 and social justice activist.

  • Denzel Washington: Acclaimed actor and director.

  • Lionel Messi: Renowned Argentine footballer, who was unable to attend the ceremony.

  • Michael J. Fox: Actor and advocate for Parkinson's disease research.

  • Earvin "Magic" Johnson: Basketball legend and philanthropist.

  • José Andrés: Spanish-American chef and founder of World Central Kitchen.

  • Dr. Jane Goodall: Primatologist and conservationist.

  • Ralph Lauren: Fashion designer.

  • Anna Wintour: Editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine.

The White House stated that these individuals were selected for their "exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors."

The inclusion of Soros and Clinton among the honorees has intensified political debates, with critics accusing President Biden of politicizing the nation's highest civilian honor. Supporters, however, argue that the awards appropriately recognize the significant societal contributions made by these individuals.
